With a background in journalism dating from the Rand Daily Mail and Wits Student days, founding partners Sarah Hetherington and Katharine McKenzie with the String team have successfully launched and self-published several pioneering print titles.

Delivery – the Magazine for Local Government – provided an accessible mix of policy and practice and was delivered free of charge to every councillor across the country, and to other stakeholders, such as provincial government, Members of Parliament and key members of the national executive. In all, 30 issues of the highly regarded quarterly publication were published until a loss of advertising revenue primarily from the public sector made the project unviable for a small business to continue.

Mobility, a magazine focussing on integrated transport, saw 13 issues being produced, and coincided with a growing focus in String’s work on public transport and its role in reshaping South Africa’s spatial inequality.

String also had great fun exploring the newspaper space within the Cape Town CBD and surrounds with a monthly tabloid free-sheet called CityLife.

These publications also provided a great training ground in journalism for recent graduates at String, as well as a creative outlet for our design studio.
